use of _ in symbol names

We currently have a lot of variables and functions/methods named with leading underscores. In the case of Sirocco we're developing an application, not a library, so we shouldn't consider that anything without an underscore will be accessed by users. It would make the code more readable to reduce these underscored names to the bare minimum.
