How to configure profiles

This is more of a set of questions than an issue. I'm just getting started with lightweight dita, and have been searching the internet for an answer. Given an intention to use open toolkit on markdown files with dita maps, however do I configure the tool to use the markdown extended profile? Everyone seems to take for granted that there is a way to do that, but what is it? Also, is there any access to the source files from which you created these expansions? - I'm trying to find out if there is a way, perhaps with yaml headers, to provide keywords in source markdown files that would be useful to a (which?) search tool.

Have you tried simply running your lwdita extended profile markdown files through the DITA OT? What happens? I would expect it to just work.

I came across https://www.xmlmind.com/ditac/_distrib/doc/manual/webhelp2/mditaSupport.html and used that, which does help. What does it take to get the full set of ATX headings (up to 6 heading levels defined by added #, or at least 4 levels) to be allowed? My team lead is very unhappy about only being allowed 2. What are ATX headings? Anyway, it's standard for a DITA topic to have only 2 levels of heading possible. If you want more heading levels, you should be able to do them by nesting topics in the map. Something like this, nested files should add heading levels in the output:

Those are markdown headings using an increasing number of pound signs, up to 6. My engineering team decided all it wanted was markdown, never mind the advantages of dita, so it’s going with that. Oh well. Personally, I’m trying to move to the regular doc team, which uses full dita and oxygen.
