setting DOOMWADDIR or using -doom2 (and similar) options - iwad never found unless placed in working directory #83

Hi. I'm new to deutex so maybe I'm missing something. Despite setting DOOMWADDIR or using one of the iwad options (-doom -doom2, etc), my iwad is never located unless it is in the working directory where I'm calling deutex. I always get the AA18 message:
E AA18 Can't find any of doom.wad, doom2.wad, doompres.wad, heretic.wad, hexen.wad, strife1.wad

$ env | grep DOOM
DOOMWADDIR=/home/john/Games/idSoftware/DoomGames/iwad

$ mkdir /dev/shm/tempwaddir

$ deutex -dir /dev/shm/tempwaddir -extract MM.WAD
i AA17 Doom directory is /home/john/Games/idSoftware/DoomGames/iwad
i AA22 Files will be saved in directory /dev/shm/tempwaddir
E AA18 Can't find any of doom.wad, doom2.wad, doompres.wad, heretic.wad, hexen.wad, strife1.wad

$ deutex -doom2 ../iwad/doom2.wad -dir /dev/shm/tempwaddir -extract MM.WAD
i AA17 Doom directory is /home/john/Games/idSoftware/DoomGames/iwad
i AA15 Main directory: ../iwad/doom2.wad
i AA22 Files will be saved in directory /dev/shm/tempwaddir
E AA18 Can't find any of doom.wad, doom2.wad, doompres.wad, heretic.wad, hexen.wad, strife1.wad

In the first example, I'm just relying on DOOMWADDIR, but it doesn't seem to find the iwad (no "Main Directory" listed). In the second example I am specifying the wad, and it seems to detect it, but still gives the error. My way of getting around this is to either copy or link the iwad to whatever directory I'm in, which is less than convenient. Am I doing something incorrectly or is this a legit problem?
