How to place a banner?

I've got this mod and squaremap loaded on a 1.21.3 server (Fabric). Squaremap works as it should (using it for months now). I don't have any permissions mods installed, but I'm an op.

I took a banner to an anvil and gave it a name. I have a filled in map. I put the map in my offhand, banner in main hand, hold sneak button and right click to place banner. The banner is placed, but it never shows up in the squaremap web interface (I have the banners layer selected), and it never "announces" the banner when I come within 80 blocks (the default, I believe).

Am I doing this wrong?

Banner have to be named (via anvil) then you place it down, then you shift + right-click on the banner while holding a filled map (any filled map should work)

As you mentioned, you did not install any permission mod. Which by default the mod will only work for player has permission level 1.

I recommend you update the instructions on the various mod sites (and here on github) because the existing instructions are unclear.
