Hello, @ras52. We're glad you're here. We're very keenly aware of the inaccessibility of the project right now. Basically, you've got to know Java and JAXB and Github and a few other technologies in order to really participate. A lot of the issues you see open right now are a direct result of this inaccessibility. For example:
We're slowly working on providing things like a RFC-like document, some entity-relationship diagrams, some UML, some Graphic Syntax Diagrams, some user story documents, etc. I'm so glad that you're willing to contribute to that work. Thank you! At the moment, I've got to lay some initial groundwork and identify the holes that need to be filled. It's almost like you need documentation to start the documentation! So I'm going to leave this issue open until I can identify some work that we'd love to have you contribute to. I'd suspect you'll hear back within the next few weeks. Is that okay? |
Two weeks or so would be great. Might bring some new blood as it seems the discussions on open issues have just about dried up. |
Okay, so it took much longer than two weeks :-) Specification Documents |
I'm new to Gedcom X, though I'm very familiar with both GEDCOM 5.5 and the RDF technologies that are being used here. I've been trying to get to grips with the Gedcom X format because it seems to tick all the boxes for a suitable exchange format for my own home-grown genealogy program (well, suite of scripts, really).
What would really be of help is if the website had some simple examples of valid Gedcom X files with recipes for how to do various really basic things. Perhaps such things already exist and I've not discovered them? If not, if it were thought useful, I'd be very happy to work towards such a collection of documented examples as I quite enjoy that sort of documentation. I appreciate that the project is still in a relatively early stage, and things are likely to change before the final version is published. But I'm sure that some examples at this stage would really help in engaging people and soliciting feedback.
