The PyGMT paper has the more descriptive title:

The project description and paper title need not be identical. What about updating the project description to

A Python interface to the Generic Mapping Tools for geospatial visualization and analysis

I think it can help users unfamiliar with GMT understand PyGMT’s purpose.

Off-topic: Do you think we should add a DOI badge for the PyGMT paper in README.md?

Actually, I'm unsure if the new project description would be too long to fit in one line on the landing page:

I'm marking the issue as "Good First Issue" and encouraging anyone interested to give it a try, but there is no promise the changes will be accepted.

This is a good point. I agree for the landing page it looks better to have this in one line.

Just tested it for the README and the landing page:

README of GitHub repo (font size via heading level two of markdown)	Landing page (sd-fs-5 in sphinx RTD, bold in markdown)	Landing page of website (sd-fs-4 in sphinx RTD, bold in markdown, line break in html)	Landing page currently

Have to think which I find best, but currently I feel for the landing page we should stay with "A Python interface to the Generic Mapping Tools". With a short intro text (or similar)

as added in PR #4762 the purpose of the packages should be clear to new users.
