Use of different ontologies #2

Description

@CherineJ

To make the data as standardized as possible, we want to use controlled vocabulary to describe the different measurement types within the measurement or fact table of the DwC-A. To find suitable terms, we use the ontology lookup service.

While working with different ontologies, the following questions/problems arose:

  1. Can definitions of subject specific ontologies also be used for other disciplines/in different contexts (e.g., use a term of a biomedical ontology for a plant)?
  2. Which ontology to choose if they provide different definitions of the same term?
  3. Does it matter how many different ontologies we refer to within one dataset?
