Federated Boosting #5568
Comments
There is a big conceptual problem that leads me to not appreciate this functional improvement.
Therefore I cannot see or comment on the posts of social users who have not deliberately chosen to share their message inside an Activitypub Group! Can you explain to me why I should comment on the post of a Mastodon user who did not want to open a thread in a group? And furthermore, I, a Lemmy user, who finds the Mastodon post reshared in a Community that I follow, can I see the comments sent to him? I don't think so... And above all, what happens if three Lemmy users were to "reshare" the same post in three different communities of three different instances? Will the user who sees it in one Community be able to read the reply comments sent by another user who saw the post in another community? Lemmy certainly needs to improve some really critical aspects, which unfortunately are denied or unresolved by the developers, but it doesn't seem to me that it needs to be distorted |
@informapirata Adaption: Revealed checkbox with obvious indicator that would enable the feature for ActivityPub links. Possible setting to have enabled by default. That way the poster can choose how a discussion is formed. Too tired to discuss anything else currently. |
I don't understand how it would work... However, I'm not the one who has to develop code to solve the issue 😅 Are you really sure this works? I still can't mention anyone in an initial post Lemmy |
@informapirata #5257 will be released as part of Lemmy 1.0. The changes are too big to backport for 0.19. |
ah, great! I didn't understand that... |
Requirements
Is your proposal related to a problem?
Lemmy posts that link to another federated platform do not function as boosting.
Describe the solution you'd like.
When a user takes, let's say a mastodon post link, and uses that as the primary link for a post on Lemmy, it would act as a "boost" instead of a separate ActivityPub object (?).
This way, comments to the original mastodon post are reflected on Lemmy, and comments from lemmy get reflected back to Mastodon.
This would help unify federated activities together, maximizing cross platform communication and minimizing fragmented discussions.
Describe alternatives you've considered.
