I am improvising here. What exactly is the project_number and project_funder leaves space for interpretation. There is an OpenAIRE standard that handles projects but I don't know how to easily search for a proper reference.
Maybe a "Grant agreement ID" and "Funded under" as provided by CORDIS could be a good idea, but that only covers EU projects.

Maybe instead of project_number we have something like project_id to be sufficiently 'broad' to entail "Grant agreement ID" or 'project number' ? I think project_funder is broad enough and can be easily mapped to 'Funded under' inc ase we export metadata from NetCDF to the data publishing platform required format ?

I've replaced term project_number with project_id for time being.

I would expect here some machine readable project reference, but I don't know how to make one...
