You wrote that "Android doesn't allow subscribing to lock task mode changes".

Have you tried the Lifecycle callbacks?

It sounds like it is possible to be notified when the mode changes. Polling every 5sec seems unnecessary.

It is possible, but it only works in the DPC app, so not that useful.
