Translation question

I'm a Mario fans from China, I want translate Reggie to Chinese.
When I following reggiedata/help/dev_translations.html to make main.xml in translations\zh-cn folder and edit it,
Even if I change "translation" name string, it add another "English", and translation not work.

It's my mistake or reggie's ?

Hey, thanks for showing an interest in translating Reggie Next. Your translation did not show up because of a bug that broke loading translation .xml files. This bug was fixed by commit b8b3c61. Your translation should work properly in the latest source version. Could you try running the latest version and report back whether your translation works?

OH ,It looks loaded translation file, but something wrong.
I think because it's not support Chinese GBK characters encoding...?

So I deleted all translation file and just From 000A=Transparent to 000A=透明

It's unknown characters.

I'm glad to hear the initial problem has been fixed. This new error occurred because the code assumed the file was loaded using the utf-8 encoding, but on your system, the file was read using the gbk encoding. Since commit 19cad2d, Reggie explicitly reads the files using the utf-8 encoding. This means that you should make sure you save the various translation files using the utf-8 encoding, and then Reggie should be able to load them just fine.

Could you try loading your translation using the latest source version again? Please let me know if you run into any more issues or if the issue is resolved.

And... I think it's time to update help documents yet,
Defeult don't load Music translation, so I add <file name="music" path="music.txt" /> in main.xml.

I will send to our NSMBW Hack groups in QQ (Chinese IM tool),and amateur translatation.
Because... I have too many years don't content about NSMBW hack.So I may be forget some operates:(

Anothoer problem, How to translate patch (NewerSMBW) part ?
Sure, I can edit directly file that in reggiedata\patches\NewerSMBW. But I want keep original English, because maybe one day we can merge Chinese translation into repository.

In fact, Mario series have a low popularity in China, it may be unexpected. because govement's GAME CONSOLE BAN , UP TO 13 Years. (OH ,This number looks like unlucky in western, I'm sorry.)

Until 2014, it just was canceled. It past had benn banned game consoles from sale in China.
However, to this day, We still have BAD INTERNATIONAL INTERNET (man-made, high ping, high jitter and random pkt loss.) And half-force use Chinese-Only server in multi player games, (Global sever usually.)and disable bulit-in IM system.
I am using VPN to access GitHub NOW. or I will get 127.0.0.1 github.com in DNS server, and a random TCP-RESET package.

Always no tutorial, no localization, Why always nobady like I loved things?
So I want to DIY.
As a video game fans, I think, TRANSLATE and SPREAD is I SHOULD DO.
Althrough my English is too bad, but it's will be solved, right ?

First of all, I wish you a happy new year as well, and I'm glad the previous issue was fixed.

I find it difficult to comment on your experiences. I am aware of the various regulations that are in place in China regarding digital technology and the internet and I can only imagine how they make interacting with the world outside China difficult and frustrating. While your English might not be perfect, I think it's commendable that you attempt to communicate with us. Your English is certainly much better than my Chinese.

Yeah, the help documentation is quite outdated. Thanks for letting me know that the current example doesn't have a music entry. I will add that to the example.

How to translate patch (NewerSMBW) part?

The intended way to do this is to create a separate translation for the NewerSMBW patch. The extra files that are of interest are inside the reggiedata/patches/NewerSMBW/external folder. Of these files, currently only external/actors.xml can be translated (use <file name="external-actors" path="path/to/the/translated/actors.xml" />).

However, it seems this doesn't actually work due to various bugs. The game patch is prioritised over the translation, so the translated text doesn't actually appear. I will try to fix these issues in the coming days.
EDIT: This has been fixed as of commit 2106310. In addition, I've updated the help documentation to explain how you can translate game patches.

The other three .xml files in the external folder cannot currently be translated, but that is a missing feature that I will add soon, with names similar to the actors.xml case - external-gfx, external-models and external-sfx. Do note that these three files are in a very unfinished state though, and they will probably see significant changes at some point. It's probably best to first focus on translating other files to avoid wasting effort.
