What problem does this solve?

With app not currently available in an app store, how to know when there is a new release.

Proposed solution

Add option for the app to update automatically, detecting new releases and prompting the user that a new update is available to be applied.

One tangential idea related to this – you could add GIthub / FDroid / Obtainium buttons in the readme (like in this repo, for instance). I’ve found it a neat way of getting a grasp on what update options a project supports. Also, it looks nice and it’s pretty low-effort.

Obtainium in particular is an app that periodically checks GitHub releases of tracked apps and pulls them automatically. I’ve been using it for most of my FOSS apps, including MyDeck (for official releases). The button is only a matter of convenience, as it loads a pre-made config rather than having the user make one themselves through the app.
