I think we should do auto compaction a bit earlier. Or, make the water mark configurable.

Use case

I've encountered this issue several times recently: when the system decides to perform a automatic compaction (and on two occasions, even before that), it's too late - it has already reported exceeding the context window size (prompt is too long).

This is not a documented plugin config today: compaction watermark/trigger timing is not configurable. Likely context growth behavior, not an auth bug. Workarounds now: keep keep_thinking set to false, use a lower-thinking model variant, and run /compact earlier in long sessions. Keeping this open as an enhancement request for configurable auto-compaction threshold.

If you're using oh-my-opencode, there's a config-level fix for this. The plugin ships with Dynamic Context Pruning recovery logic since v3.4.0, but it's disabled by default.

There's also a feature request for proactive distillation of background task output and non-destructive recovery: oh-my-opencode#1734
