When a lot of participants talk at once, it's very hard for them to keep track of what everyone says and who replies to what. Messaging apps solve this problem by creating a "reply to comment" functionality, which displays a copy of the original message above the response. This is different from creating threads (as seen in forums), since replies only go to a maximum depth of 1.
Alternatively, if this proves to be too difficult to implement, simpler responses referring just to the user (@username) would be sufficient.
