Connect Part-DB to external hardware

Hi, I am currently trying to build a smart part storage. I need to add custom hardware to track what part and where they are in the system. Is there a way /an API/ a protocol to talk to the system (modifying the part/changing the location)?

more specifically the server is running on a Rpi and I want to communicate to the storage controller using I2C.

that is actually want I want to do, but with the MCU driving the lights connected via I2C (using the Pi's GPIO) instead of using http.

Maybe you could use a http service that you can run on the same machine that is running part-db and then trigger the wanted I2C commands. If you run part-db in docker it's also not that easy to talk to hardware GPIOs directly. Adding something like a direct I2C/GPIO access to part-db that can run on any linux system or even virtual machines/containers is something that is not useful in this way. You could also have a small ESP controller that runs the http to I2C translation that can be triggered-by or access the Part-DB API.
