Cannot hide tools + weird behavior

Hello,
First of all thank you for RefindPlus, it is very helpful.

I have read the config.conf and it states that

NB: Setting "showtools" alone, without any options, disables all tools

I did that, specifically:

hideui singleuser,hints,arrows,label,badges
showtools
disable_bootorder true

This is set in my included theme conf file.
However, I still always end up with three icons: About, Boot order, Shutdown.
These ones aren't even default (default set is described in config.conf as: About, Hidden tags, CSR rotate, Boot order, Shutdown).
Main config.conf does not have any showtools line uncommented.

What is especially weird is that pressing Esc completely removes those 3 from the screen in the current session, and no other button seems to return them to visible state. So, there is a state when they are completely hidden, yet I have to press Esc after the boot to get into that state. This isn't convenient.

Why does it happen that they aren't hidden as desired?
Why does it happen that they are hidden on Esc press (and are never returned back)?

There is a known issue with setting showtools alone.
There is an upcoming commit that addresses this.

PS: There is no disable_bootorder option in RefindPlus

EDIT:

In your specific case, you should be able to work around the issue in the interim by simply uncommenting the showtools line in your config.conf file, which presumably has items defined, while leaving the one in your theme.conf file as is (without anything defined).

Any others reading this with the same issue but having only one conf file can do this:

showtools about
showtools

That is, add two lines with the first one having something defined.
