when you give yfinance a range, it doesn't download the data for the enddate
data = yf.download(ticker, pastDate, currentDate)

fixed by requesting tomorrow instead of today, thanks for pointing this out.

currentDate = datetime.date.today() + datetime.timedelta(days=1)
