I know this has been previously discussed, and is not on the immediate roadmap
There have now been several concerned parents/teachers that unfortunately got names that they did not consider appropriate to use with their kids and the only possibility to change it currently is to re-flash.
Low priority

The "More Simply" in the title of this issue leads me to believe that there's, indeed, a way to change it, right? I hope that way doesn't involve backing-up/reflashing/restoring until you get a cool randomly generated hostname that you don't hate (at least). Can you share more about the process, does it have any bad consequences? I'm just an old Linux user learning to build a server using a WebUI...

As I stated above, "the only possibility to change it currently is to re-flash." This basically means starting over, as a back up would retain the name. These names are only used on .local for the main UI, and attractiveness is not considered a priority.
Perhaps prior to selecting the drive to install StartOS on, have an earlier screen that shows the random name selected. Offer the user an option to keep that name or 'rerandomize'. Let them keep rolling until they get a name they are satisfied with, then they select the drive and the OS installation begins.
I did a presentation / live demo of StartOS and the name selected was not appropriate - would have been nice to be able to fix it w/out reflashing...
