I set my terminal default font to 'lucidia console' and the textual user interface works.
however the 'focus' selector' ie the currently selected widget border is all blotched up.
not the usual pretty box lines.

If your terminal font doesn't include the glyphs for the borders, I'm afraid there isn't anything Textual can do.
I'm not sure which terminal you're using, but many modern emulators support font fallback for missing glyphs. You might need to experiment with different fonts that have better Unicode support.
