better handle trying to do two requests at once

Since the download runs in the background it's possible to then try to get it to download another set of data. But when I tested this it crashed, which isn't surprising. Should do some more testing to be sure that's what always happens. But if it does then we should at least disable the buttons until the first download is done, or else figure out how to enable multiple at once.
