Asciidoc: bold formatting not applied if the text has multiple lines and there is monospace text on previous lines

I'm using single stars to make some sentences bold. I've found the following:

/**
 * \brief Move-constructor.
 * \details
 * Some `code` and
 * some *bold that spans
 * several lines*.
 */
void f();

}  // namespace boost::mysql

Rendered as:

Looking at the docs I couldn't find any mention to using stars for making things bold, so apologies if I'm trying something that's not supported. I've tried <strong> and @strong and they don't seem to be supported, either.
