issued upgrading from 5.0.0 to 7.1.1

PAI / LifeOS is fantastic - I've been using it since Feb.

Previous upgrades have gone ok (some issues where claude / PAI created files with my work outside /USER/ which were then 'lost' on upgrade - I have them in backup but didn't look at how to reinstate them and just moved on.

However, going from 5.0.0 to 7.1.1 today didn't work as intended. There are a few failsafes that triggered and PAI advised me not to upgrade. Some of this may be because I wasn't on v6 already with LifeOS.

If you've had success at migrating from 5.0.0 to 7.1.1 I'd like to hear how it went and what approach you took.

Yeah, this was a PITA for me.

I first used v5 PAI to work through what changes, more or less, from my customization and such. Made a bundle of settings/customizations/etc that needed to be migrated. Did a fresh install into a fresh ~/.claude instance, then used that agent pointing it at the detailed dir with the "what needs migrating in" to add in some (still adding more back!) customizations. Then went through copying over as much of the TELOS/etc that I had setup into the new system. Which, fun fact, is now a single TELOS.md, not a set of different files.

Then did a fresh /Interview to pick up the newer TELOS bits that weren't asked/answered. Which, by the way, some things have been remapped a bit.

Then started working to get things copied back over.

Oh, and also, a major thing, PATTERNS.yaml is no longer a thing, if you customized that security stuff. That's been released back to the built-in Claude Code native pattern matching/globbing/etc for security allow/deny/ask functionality.

I'm holding off on the 7 upgrade, as the premise of the refactor relies on using a smart model... I have limited access right now to Fable so I'm waiting for that level of intelligence to be more accessible.

I didn't use Fable, just used Opus whatever. Opus is pretty smart, relatively. Although I'm not in favor of it's personality change recently coinciding with Fable release...

Go ahead and update now, or when you have a day or so to make sure you can rebuild/carry over any customizations you've made.

The supported 5.0.0 → 7.1.1 path is what @Drizzt321 described: fresh install into a clean ~/.claude, port your USER/ and MEMORY/ content into the new tree, then run /interview to pick up the remapped TELOS fields (v7 uses a single unified TELOS.md). The failsafes you hit fire on in-place cross-major upgrades by design — 5.x → 7.x in place isn't a supported jump. If you share the specific warnings you saw, happy to confirm nothing else was wrong. And your earlier "files created outside /USER/ got lost on upgrade" note is exactly what issue #1485's new Doctor.ts --reclaim addresses in the next release — worth running once you're on it.
