Some hackerspaces might use a specific barcode scanner, that only supports EAN codes. So the barcode has to use numbers. When you use numbers to identify users, you shouldn't use concecutive numbers/ids, because you could guess them and pay with an id of another person.
The ids shouldn't be too long (maybe 5 characters), so you could remember them and make a manual input if the scanner doesn't work.

I think we should use the barcodes that are already on the stuff we want to sell. This way you don't have to put up and labels. A secondary id intended for manual entering wouldn't hurt though.
In brmbar you can use barcodes for products (the existing ones, on the labels) and users who buy the products. What I meant were the user barcodes, which get generated and are connected to your "bank account" on brmbar. So you get a product, scan it and then scan a printed barcode of your user on brmbar.
