How usage of NFC tags would work:

You pick any NFC tag (this can be a card you carry around with you anyways, one emulated by your phone, one at your key chain etc.)
You link that NFC tag to your account
you can pay with the NFC tag

Advantages compared to barcode authentication:

More security (only if you can disable barcode authentication for your account)
You can authenticate with something you carry around with you anyways
