I think, if you as students build up reputation on these repositories and you help review, this could help merge faster. Just Saying LGTM does not make it a feedbacking review. These are three questions which can guide you through a review:

• What do you value about this pull request (always the time the other person put in but more?)
• What would you like to improve and why? Ask the other person if they also see it like this and what they think about it.
• What did you learn/how did this pull request enrich your life?

These three things are hard to do, partly because I think we were not trained to do that. It may take up to 15 Minutes to really do that. But it builds up trust and reputation, I think.

Even I think this really compliments the spirit of open source and could be a good task
