Two issues:

1. Is there a size limit on the array?

2. If I use a Unicode map as per https://docs.qmk.fm/features/unicode , can I set uppercase BANG to IRONY (as an example)?

1. There is, but you're going to be limited on firmware size and memory size before you hit the end. For ARM, I think that this is 4294967295, if not a LOT higher.
2. Unfortunately no. The code uses register_code16 which supports basic keycodes plus mods, only.

Thanks for reply. So this "unlimited" array provides one half of the solution I need, and the QMK UP(i, j) version does the other, but that only caters for 64 pairs. I need a merged solution :-)

Is there no way to say that when I hold SHIFT, send keys on Layer 2, and when I hold SHIFT-AltGR, send keys on Level 4? It seems silly to have to do everything via custom functions...

But I'm a noob with this stuff... maybe there are good reasons...

@iandoug you might be interested in my writeup on non-English and unicode symbols in QMK. The long and the short of it is that each UP key requires looking up and setting two Unicode codepoints. E.g. for an ñ, code 0x00f1 for lowercase "ñ" and code 0x00d1 for uppercase "Ñ." It's possible, but cumbersome to do this for more than a handful of symbols.

So I guess 64 pairs is enough that most users get tired of Unicode before then. But not drashna, with his epic unicode_typing module. =)

You can create an effect like that through use of layers. Replace "SHIFT" with momentary layer switch MO(2), and "AltGr" with another layer switch MO(3). Then use Tri Layer to say that Layer 2 + Layer 3 activates Layer 4.
