On a 486 machine, 486Quake will not load past "Playing registered version." Retail Quake starts up just fine.
I even built my own copy of 486Quake with djgpp on Linux and it has the same problem.
I wish I had more detailed information, but that's all I have. It exhibits this problem whether or not an XMS manager is loaded. Straight to DOS(skipping config.sys and autoexec.bat) also has the same problem.
