Save solution or file as template

Possible new feature, suggested in the forum, of being able to generate
a project template from a currently open solution. Also create a file
template from the selected or open file.

Hi Daniel,

I'd like to work on this new feature because I want to dig deeper into the templating engine of #D 5 and that kind of stuff. And since there is no schedule for this it seems pretty ok for me ;-) What do you think?

Yes, that's OK.

About the template engine: it's a mess that has grown various features since the SD 1.x days. In SD 5.x I put it behind an abstraction (ProjectTemplate / FileTemplate abstract classes), so that it's possible to have non-.xpt-based templates by registering a custom ProjectTemplate implementation in the AddInTree.
However, we don't have any plans of replacing the .xpt/.xft file formats at the moment.
