Multiple departments support in the LocalBusiness entity

According to Google it is possible to have multiple departments in the LocalBusiness object.

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/local-business#multiple-departments

However https://schema.org/LocalBusiness treats a department as a single Organisation.

I'm curious if adding multiple departments is something that is acceptable?
