IFDB is not that welcoming to newcomers #963

Newcomers may stumble onto IFDB, but the homepage doesn't do a good job of explaining what IF is, or provide tips on how to interact with the games, or the kinds of games there are.

  1. The homepage has a "New to IF?" link at the top, but it's hard to notice as part of the toolbar. The link should move closer to the text that explains what IFDB is.
  2. That link leads to a small "New to IF?" section. All that section has, is an explanation on how to "run" games by clicking on "Play online". That's not introducing anything.
  3. I think there should be a bigger section, maybe it's own page, that explains that various kinds of games or how to interact with them, suggesting good introductory games in various genres or modes, including recommended playing times, etc. Alternatively, link to an outside website. Is there a good one?

Since new players might visit IFDB through a link to a specific pages, I think there should be a "What is Interactive Fiction" or "Need Help" link on all pages. Perhaps on the top header, and only when users are logged out...?
