I have many folders which I would like to upload using the CLI tool. I would like to have the folders become albums. can I do this all at once? so have a folder with all my folders full of pictures and each folder becomes an album?

I know this command exists

--album/ -al

if so how would I use it?

You just need to add that into your cli command then it should upload everything as album

You can use Google Takeout to get your file out as far as I know

I have been using the CLI to upload my library and in an instance it cancelled out. i think it was my fault. if i run it again on the same folder structure will it filter out the duplicates?

Thats great thanks. does it use file name to filter the duplicates? If i have 2 identical pictures with different names does it detect that or only if its the same name?

It uses the file name and the file size as the ID to identify the unique file

Good catch Alex, not sure how I missed that. Based on the 'Content-Length': 181871 header, the body is 181KB.
The default body size limit we get is apparently 100KB (https://github.com/expressjs/body-parser/blob/0632e2f378d53579b6b2e4402258f4406e62ac6f/lib/types/json.js#L53-L55). That seems strangely low to me, we should probably up it.

The case we're seeing here is the "add assets to album" call, which just sends a list of UUIDs to add. I think this is also our largest clientside JSON body, so I will use that endpoint for this calculation.
Each UUID is 36 bytes (in string representation). There's also a few extra bytes in the JSON, but I will ignore those here.
At a 100KB request body limit, we can add (approx) 100KB/36B = 2777 assets to an album in one request before getting a 413 error. I think a theoretical limit of adding 277 777 assets to an album at once, for a 10MB request body, sounds pretty reasonable :)

Nothing you need to do for the error, this is a serverside bug. I do recommend rerunning the upload to get the few assets that were missed before because of that crash.

thanks for getting back to me Alex. OK I have deleted the GIF files and it says its uploaded all the files

however the issue i see is that it uploads all 5234 pictures/videos but the album it crated it only added 3033

is there a limit to the size of the album?

I have 2 albums. in each album there are duplicate photos. the CLI recognizes that there are duplicate and it will not upload them as they have already been uploaded. working as expected :) however the issue is I think it will only add the files apart of that upload to the album it creates. so Album1 has 600 assets and Album2 has 1000 assets. If i upload Album1 it uploads them all and creates an album with 600 assets. in Album2 it has 200 duplicates from album it recognizes this and only uploads 800. here is where the issue is. it will only create an album with the assets its uploads and wont add the 200 which are pre existing on the server

1. There is no size limit for the album.
2. We currently don't have a mechanism to add the pre-existing file on the server when uploading from the CLI. The workaround is, unfortunately, to add them manually. Please open a feature request in the CLI repo so that we can take a look at implementing such a feature sometimes in the future.
