Geobounds (ST_Envelope, ST_XMin, etc.), ST_AsGeoJSON support

Hello,

I'm happy to look into working on this additional support for Drill if this isn't already in the works, but I'm just wondering if the best approach to having this eventually built into Drill is to submit PRs to this project, or to Drill itself?

If this project, tips for how I can test against code from my fork of this repo from within Drill will also be helpful, if you don't mind?

Hey! Great to see that there's interest in this project. Actually, I've already had ST_Envelope implemented so here it comes. Also added Min/Max functions.

If you want to use this as a plugin for Apache Drill, just follow Readme instructions (build from sources and copy required files). At the moment if you use Drill version with basic gis functions merged (>1.2.0) it would be good to remove those functions from this drill-gis sources before building (otherwise there'll be duplicates).

In following days I hope to create a release to make it easier.

When it comes on geojson support, it's not that easy as drill supports json with strict structure which most of the time wasn't the case with geojson (I tried to support it long time ago, maybe I'll get back to it in the future, feel free to contribute!).
As of contributing directly to Drill on gis functions, there's already PR for functions from this plugin (DRILL-4091) but they prefer to keep it simple in main project, so further development is here.

Let me know if geobounds implemented meets your requirements!

Thank you! We will start testing this next month and will see how we fare. There is a very good chance we'll jump in with contributions to the GeoJSON support. I say "we" because I likely won't be the only one getting involved :)

Is this issue the best place for conversations about these enhancements, as well as testing of your existing components?

That would be the best option to finally get these additional gis functions into Drill!
There's already a PR for all of these changes:
apache/drill#258

It's updated, so you may take a look and give it some momentum.
