This is likely due to HathiTrust's use of Cloudflare. See the similar error on hathi-downloadhelper (https://sourceforge.net/p/hathidownloadhelper/tickets/45/).

The dev there said:

Dear HDH users,

Thanks to feedback from other users, I've been able to determine the likely cause of the HDH malfunction.

The Hathitrust website uses Cloudflare to protect itself from internet attacks.

Unfortunately, this also blocks the automated download of the HDH.

Due to time constraints, I am currently unable to develop a solution in the foreseeable future.

Thank you for your understanding.

So unless someone else wants to try to mitigate the Cloudflare protection, I think this loophole is unfortunately closed for now.
