PHP permissions for .git folder/files

I do not see git repo information in my /debug screen, looking at the php, I assume that is indicative of the www-data user being unable to see the .git folder, so it might not be trying to generate the card

Can anyone recommend a way to troubleshoot how to get that debug card showing?

unsure what permisssions I need for the .git file to be visible to the PHP/apache2 www-data user for line 161 of application/views/debug/main.php to execute

Git requires the current user to be the owner of the files, it does not work if current user is a "member" of the group

For .git files belonging to user1:group1

    Git will not throw error if you are user1
    Git will throw error if you are user2:group1

if I change the .git folder owner from "root:www-data" to "www-data:www-data" then the card works and I no longer get dubious ownership error
