+If Open Source has benefitted from me, it is because of [@mikeal](https://github.com/mikeal) pissing me off online and then pulling me into the fold. Feel like you could do it better? He’d get you the ground to stand on to do it.

+Mikeal became my "get in, we're...going to [work on community and resilience/build a startup/spin out a project]' friend/older brother/career sponsor/peer.
+ 
+He often questioned and challenged my views, and never once questioned my abilities. We became sparring peers in big community and governance ideas while seeing eye-to-eye in the potential of people—bringing them together and getting out of their way. Mikeal walked the walk in teaching me, and us, the importance of succession for sustaining a group, a community, a movement, a project, and recognizing when it was time to leave so it could continue to grow beyond you.

+My life is not defined by my career. And Mikeal was more than a next-big-challenge instigator. I get to go home and bear hug the coolest kids in the world tonight because of Mikeal’s vortex and preternatural ability to form early, playful, weird, and hella-smart communities. Our paths, where intertwined in community, open source, and career, led eventually to my partner and I meeting at NodeConf summer camp.

+Ever been to a conference with a swimming hole, a fireside storytelling with a ‘speaker’ sharing an impressively detailed synopsis of ALL Star Wars books, and later you get to observe that same speaker in a ‘hallway track’ circle of folks on a dirt path near the bunks, arguing about promises in JS and Node.js alongside many other folks who would be contributing to TC39, Node.js, and how we think about JS for the next decade? There’s a lot of these stories. It’s just what he did.

+✨ May we continue his legacy, with more moments of connection and believing in people, especially in the depths of technical, philosophical, and coffee brewing debate. Mikeal did that effortlessly with so many of us. I carry that with me. ✨
