How to convert a Hover Editor into a regular tab?

When I have a note open in the Hover Editor and I want to a) convert it to a regular tab and b) close the hover editor with that note, how do I achieve this? I've not found an easy way to do this.

I'm not fond of the Dock Hover Editor to workspace option because I'd like to open a regular tab instead, not a separate pane (which I cannot even merge with a tab group).

The quickest way I've found of doing this is actually via Quick Explorer: if I click on folder name and drag & drop the active note into the tab container. But then I still need to close the Hover Editor afterwards.

Either I'm missing something obvious, or the Hover Editor is missing an obvious feature 😕

What version of Obsidian are you using? The "dock hover editor to workspace" command creates a tab in the first tab group of the main window, assuming you're on at least Obsidian 0.16.3 (the version that introduced tabs, I believe), and a relatively recent hover editor.

Conversely, if you're using an older Obsidian (<1.6) or the very latest Hover Editor (0.11.22) you can drag a hover editor's view header icon and dock it anywhere you like, in any window. You just need to display the hover editor's view header (by clicking the little "boxed v" icon on its top bar, or turning on "show view header by default" in the Hover Editor settings).

It appears that there's an issue when multiple tab groups are open:

Ah, it's an issue if your top-level split is vertical instead of horizontal. That makes sense why I couldn't repro. I will fix that, but in the meantime you should be able to drag by the view header icon (just under the "pin", visible around 0:16-0:17 in your video) to the desired location and drop it there.

Version 0.11.23 now supports vertical splits in the main area, or any number of nested splits, and will always place the new tab in the first pane/tab group found.
