The problem
Copernicus support has alerted users that GFAS v1.2 will cease receiving updates next month on 04/12/2025 due to the discontinuation of MODIS.
GFAS v1.4.2 will replace v1.2 using data from VIIRS and will continue to receive updates. The fires sector should be tested with GFAS 1.4.2 data to ensure compatibility.
This change is not urgent, until we want to prepare a prior for a period following Dec 4 2025. It remains to be seen how CDS plans to make GFAS 1.4.2 available in an official capacity, or what time period it will cover.
Definition of "done"
The fires sector has been updated to work with GFAS 1.4 data/format for periods after 04/12/2025.
Additional context
There is scant documentation on the changes between v1.2 and v1.4 of GFAS. However, the docs for accessing GFAS via SFTP indicate the GFAS 1.4.1 provides hourly data, where 1.2 was a single 24 hour average.
