Posted at 2018-05-25 by Ollie I'd be interested. No access to a laser cutter, but would the design lends itself to 3D printing? Posted at 2018-05-25 by Frida I'm interested in 2 Posted at 2018-05-26 by Enclavet Interested Posted at 2018-05-26 by @MaBecker I prefer a 3d printed one and will start a design be next week. Posted at 2018-05-26 by @gfwilliams It turns out you can cut it out on a £150 diode laser engraver. That's what I used for some of the prototype bits (with the slightly less shiny edge). You could 3D print it I guess, but a custom design would be a lot better to avoid printing the different slices. @MaBecker great! OpenSCAD? :) I'll try and send over the SVGs I have - they might help for measurements. Posted at 2018-05-26 by @MaBecker Yep, will use OpenSCAD and SVG would make things easier - Thanks in advance Posted at 2018-06-05 by @yerpj FYI, I am designing a 3d-printable housing for the PixL.js. I will publish the files as soon as it is finished. Attachments: Posted at 2018-06-05 by @gfwilliams Nice - thanks! :) Posted at 2018-06-05 by @yerpj For those who have a 3d printer and don't know what to print right now, maybe you could try this housing and tell me if the two parts are correctly tied together :-) Posted at 2018-06-05 by @gfwilliams Looks really good - any chance you could upload STLs as well? I think they might be a bit easier for most people. Posted at 2018-06-05 by @yerpj Yes , sure. I didn't even try to 3d print it, maybe tomorrow morning . As soon as the housing is " good enough" I will give access to STL files. Posted at 2018-06-05 by @yerpj Just forgot to say that a STEP file of the PixL.js ( simplified) is already available on the git. I made it available to let people make their own housing around it. Posted at 2018-06-05 by @allObjects As much I like the form factor - not adding much to the foot print - I'm working on something that would bring the buttons to the top next to the screen. Posted at 2018-06-05 by Ollie
Nice. One suggestion would be an opening for access to the micro-USB port? Posted at 2018-06-05 by @yerpj I will try to see what it looks like with an USB hole. My first assumption is that it would not be very sexy, because the hole must be large enough to accept the plastic part of the microUSB connector. I will try and see what it looks like. Stay tuned :) Posted at 2018-06-06 by Frida Maybe like a breakout, for those who need it? Posted at 2018-06-06 by @gfwilliams @allObjects I love the top-button idea. I never even thought of that, but some kind of lever arrangement would work really well! Posted at 2018-06-07 by @yerpj OK I just printed the first version. Attachments: Posted at 2018-06-07 by @yerpj and the top Attachments: Posted at 2018-06-07 by @yerpj ... Posted at 2018-06-08 by Ollie Looks good! Posted at 2018-06-08 by @yerpj .. Posted at 2018-06-09 by @MaBecker this is what I am working on: Attachments: Posted at 2018-06-10 by Ollie Also looks good @MaBecker. You guys are saving us a job. Posted at 2018-06-11 by @yerpj I just uploaded the *STL files: https://github.com/yerpj/PixLcase I slightly adapted the 2-part housing in order to make it easier to assemble. Posted at 2018-06-11 by @gfwilliams Looks really good from what I can see - yes, picture upload is pretty strange. It might just be to do with the size (width and/or kBytes) of the picture? If you email them to me (or stick them on GitHub) then I'll upload them though. Posted at 2018-06-11 by @yerpj They are now on the GitHub folder: Posted at 2018-06-11 by @allObjects @yerpj, slick! Posted at 2018-06-20 by @gniezen Printed it last night on a Prusa i3 MK3 @ 0.15mm with PLA. Thanks @yerpj, it looks good! I would love to see an OpenSCAD version too.. Attachments: Posted at 2018-06-21 by @yerpj Great! The PixL.js logo is not bad at all, despite its small size. Did you have any difficulty assembling it ? Did you notice anything that should be improved ? Posted at 2018-06-21 by @gniezen It is a really tight fit in terms of assembly - I had to use a flat screwdriver to lift the corners in order to get them to close. Would one clip per corner instead of two maybe be sufficient? I actually had to print the top part a second time, as it delaminated from the print bed at the corner where the logo is. This is mostly my own fault, as the first layer height wasn't calibrated correctly, but on the second print (with correct first layer height) it still lifted up from the bed a little bit. Maybe this could be resolved by moving the logo to the left by a small amount? Posted at 2018-06-21 by @gfwilliams
Probably having the logo on there makes it a lot more likely to delaminate anyway since the printer's having to do some quite detailed stuff on the lower layers... It looks great as-is, but if the case extended over the black bit and edges of the display then not only would it detect the relatively delicate display controller under the black rubber, but you'd have a much bigger area in contact with the printer bed which might help to combat lifting as well? Posted at 2018-06-21 by @yerpj --> https://github.com/yerpj/PixLcase/blob/master/preview_2.png Would this new version address the current issues ? Posted at 2018-06-21 by @gfwilliams Very cool - yes, I'd have thought so! I'll have to give it a go on my printer too (although the quality off mine really isn't great). Posted at 2018-06-21 by @yerpj Whoops, just realized that buttons have disappeared... I'll check that Posted at 2018-06-21 by @yerpj Here it is. STL files updated, this time WITH the buttons on both side. Posted at 2018-06-21 by Ollie Nice. What's the light? Pixl doesn't have a backlight does it. If it does I'd missed that feature. Just an LED in there? Posted at 2018-06-21 by @MaBecker The led stand for the backlight ;-) Posted at 2018-06-22 by Ollie Ha. I had completely missed this feature @MaBecker. Cheers! Posted at 2018-06-29 by @yerpj I found time to 3D-print the latest CAD model of the PixL.js housing. It fits pretty well around the PixL.js, the clips are easier to clip on and clip off, and the Display COG is now hidden behind the housing: In case pictures are missing, you'll find them here : https://github.com/yerpj/PixLcase (PixLJs_1.jpg, PixLJs_2.jpg and PixLJs_3.jpg) Posted at 2018-06-29 by @gfwilliams Wow, that looks awesome - thanks! I should add that GitHub has a proper 3D viewer for STL files, so you can check out what the case looks like in 3D here Getting these printed at i.materialise will cost around £22, and dirtypcbs charge around $22 (so 30% cheaper). Anyone else know of any cheaper 3D printing places you can send off to? Posted at 2018-06-29 by Ollie I'd bet 3Dhubs are competitive - though I've just tried to upload the STL to get some representative prices and it would not accept the files. I also can't open them in Cura? Just me? It does look excellent though. Posted at 2018-06-29 by Ollie I downloaded again - fine that time. 3Dhubs - PLA 200μm layer height - £4.38 + £2 shipping (UK second class) Europe shipping (tracked) is £10 Posted at 2018-06-29 by @gfwilliams Nice, thanks! Ordered - if this turns out ok I'll be using 3Dhubs way more! Just a thought in terms of printability - you could always take away the 'bridges' in TOP_PixlJsCase that are at the foot of the buttons and over the USB hole, and move them into BOT_PixlJsCase. Might make it print easier on the more useless printers :) Posted at 2018-06-29 by @yerpj I will do it Posted at 2018-06-29 by @yerpj
Thanks for the advice. I modified both parts accordingly. Posted at 2018-06-29 by @gfwilliams Nice - thanks! Posted at 2018-07-02 by @gfwilliams Just got the print back from 3D Hubs - £8 delivered, just a few days later (it's with your older design, before your made those slight printability tweaks). Everything clips in perfectly and it looks great, however they obviously printed both side by side so the texture of the front part changes when the rear finished printing :) Attachments: Posted at 2018-07-02 by @yerpj It looks great anyway! cost+delivery time is very appealing! Posted at 2018-07-02 by Ollie I printed one at weekend. Was impressed with the fit too. Nice job! Attachments: Posted at 2018-07-03 by @yerpj
Thanks!! I'm glad to see the housing is useful to you. Posted at 2018-07-03 by Frida Ordered a pair at 3dhubs. Posted at 2018-07-16 by MarcEvan These cases look nice but the problem I have is how to embed the Pixl into a larger panel. i.e. as an automotive display. How can can I bring the buttons forward from their current side placement? Posted at 2018-07-16 by @gfwilliams I just created a new thread to discuss front-facing buttons here: http://forum.espruino.com/conversations/323278/ Posted at 2021-09-08 by user134120 Thank you for model. Fit very good! Attachments: Posted at 2021-09-14 by @gfwilliams That looks great! What's it printed in? Is that PLA, or something else? Posted at 2021-09-14 by user134120 This is PET (not PETG). This printed from home made filament from PET bottles. |

I've got a design for laser-cut perspex cases for Pixl.js, which include pressable buttons and even pin names on the back.
Who is interested in these?
I'll put the designs online for free, but realistically if I get a bunch made it's going to end up being much cheaper and easier than if you all have to send away for one.
