ESP-IDF V3 .0 rc-1 is out

There are 22 breaking changes in this version. Not talking about changes in components, that we already know. In a first test, I don't even get Hello-World example running.
With other words, it may take some time to get Espruino running again.

hmm.. Might stay away from this for a while then.

It might be confusing with your BLE changes in ESP32 branch too.

in the meantime I can look at updating the build tools to use:

Release 2.1.1 is a bug fix release. It includes the fixes for KRACK and BlueBorne vulnerabilities.

my 2 cents, I would wait for release of V3.0
Also would not spend time on V2.1.1
Experience from last updates of ESP-ISF is a 4 weeks delay between rc1 and release.
