Never assigned an ip address (0.0.0.0)

I've followed the official examples as well as several online. I consistently get "0.0.0.0" from Wifi.getIP().ip

I do appear to have a legit MAC address but in general the wifi connection seems to be failing. Has anyone else had this issue?
