The respective SDL devel package is nowadays (in my case, Ubuntu 24.04) simply named libpng-dev, without any specific version number in the name. Not aware if the documentation will be updated, but I thought I just leave a small note for anybody who wants to compile the game. The building worked successfully after realizing this.
