Erroneous error message on shell creation in non-git repo

We get an error message when opening a new shell that's cwd isn't a git repo that looks like this:

fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git                                                                                                                                                                   [28/28]
[hostname] ~❯

Making this issue so I don't forget about this. I already debugged the basic things, but haven't dug into the async stuff.
