When you move your cursor where the red dot is, you still can click the link. I'd prefer if you can only click the link when you're directly over it.
I think there should be an option to disable this, because it could get annoying when you misclick.

What if the link label is very short, like ..? Should it still just recognize hovering only over that or do you think the option should have a minimum width for the link?

I think having a minimum width is alright.
The option could be a slider where the far left is matching the actual link, far right is full width, and in between you can customize the minimum width.
