Firmware build variants are being simplified!

With SD card font downloads working more reliably, CrossInk is starting a phased move toward a single firmware build.

If you currently use no_emoji or teensy, update to the tiny build instead. To keep the same downloaded reader font-size range that no_emoji or teensy used, go to Settings > Reader > Download Font Size Range and change it to the build variant you want. You can also build your own fonts with any font size you want with Crosspoint's Font Builder. For those too lazy to use the font builder, I've also included the compiled .cpfont files in the crossink-fonts github. Just download them and put them on your SD card in the .fonts or fonts folder.

The last build variant to be retired will be xlarge. After that, tiny will become the default firmware build and the release artifact will eventually be renamed from firmware-tiny-*.bin to just firmware.bin. To prepare for this change, if you are using the built-in fonts, start downloading your preferred font sizes for those NOW. All 3 of the built-in fonts are available for download through Manage Fonts. Set your preferred downloaded font sizes with the Download Font Size Range setting.

tldr; no_emoji, xlarge, teensy builds are going away. tiny will become the new default. If you are using the built-in fonts, start migrating TODAY! If you mainly use SD card fonts in these builds then there is little to no impact. If you have any questions, let me know!

Correct, tiny users don't need to do anything. Eventually the name tiny will be removed and it'll just be the default. There is the possibility in the future that I'll need to remove some built-in font sizes and fonts to make room for new features, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Are there plans to support 6 font sizes with the font builder? Main drawback of using custom fonts is only having 4 sizes available

Theoretically we could allow any amount lol but it'd just take forever to build, and right now it's using Github Actions to build and everyone is using the same builder so if a lot of people are using it at once it can slow things down for everyone. I'll see about opening a PR into Crosspoint's font builder to allow up to 8. I think beyond that might be a bit much. I've gotten around it by just building the font twice with 2 different font size ranges.

maybe I am missing the way of how font builder works , since tiny supports fonts up to 16, how can I achieve size 20? Will simplified firmware have bigger sizes?

Tiny can "support" any size font, it just only came bundled with the 4. If you add SD card fonts, it can see any size font you load into it. And no, once simplified down to one build, it won't have more sizes. If anything, I could start removing sizes to make more room in the firmware and if users wanted the sizes, they'd load it as SD card fonts.

I truly don't mind the 1.3.3 No Emoji release. I'm not seeing any crashing or problems with this firmware. I am new to the world of E-Readers, and the Xteink X4. Out of curiosity do I need to continue to update this the way I normally would with a smartphone? If I was to Update my firmware would I loose all of the fonts I have already edited now that they are CPfonts files and downloaded? I think they're already on the SD card but when I put the SD in my phone I cant see the .fonts folder at all.

Folders that start with a period are hidden by default, so that's probably why you can't see it. When you update the firmware, you don't lose anything as everything is stored on the SD card.

For some reason I cannot connect anymore to my X3 via the hotspot feature. My phone and conputer fail to connect to the hotspot wifi created by the X3. Do you have any ideas?
