Unexpected test PASS

It was found that the xsim output is never checked for a graceful exit, meaning it is possible for some tests to "run" the xsim portion to immediately hit an exception, but the test still be deemed a "PASS".  This was caught in the legacy test setup, as the exception calls would end up in the log.  I think this is related to the same core issue that causes #37.
