"Publication" is used for the Journal Article item type to indicate the journal title, and "Journal Abbr" is used to indicate the abbreviated journal title. Renaming these fields to something more alike ("Journal" and "Journal Abbr"?), and grouping the fields together seems like a rather obvious improvement.

I concur with this. I might say "Journal Title" and "Journal Abbr." for clarity, but definitely moving them next to each other would be useful.
