Jastrow-Klein-Dicts

This project aims to create a lexicon of Hebrew and Aramaic words that derive from Greek using the Jastrow and Klein dictionaries as sources for each entry.

This lexicon may be of use (although not limited) to those interested in:

  • The influence of Greek on Hebrew and Aramaic.
  • Understanding the Greek language by way of its impact on other languages.
  • Jastrow and Klein's spelling and use of Greek words in their dictionaries.

See the lexicon here

The code in this repository was used to help generate the lexicon. Mind, however, that simply running these scripts will not create the same dictionary as some manual work went into its development.

Dictionaries used:

  • Jastrow, M. Dictionary of the Targumim, Talmud Bavli, Talmud Yerushalmi and Midrashic literature.

  • Klein, E. (1971). A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the English Language. Carta Jerusalem.

  • Lidel, Scott, Jones Ancient Greek Lexicon taken from Perseus.

In data folders:

Contains both csv and xml version of Jastrow and Klein dictionaries. Contains csv and html files for data extracted from these dictionaries.

In code folders:

Contains scripts to analyze, extract, and modify necessary entries from the mentioned dictionaries. And contains scripts that build the pages to share this project.

(Note: Some scripts require derivative files to exists. For Example: Merge/code/merge.py requires Greek-Jastrow.csv and Greek-Klein.csv to exist).
