Balzan, Mario; D.C. Mansoldo, Mark; Serra, Elisa; Igondova, Erika; Moustakas, Aristides, et al. (2025). The SMI-NBS Compendium: a Global Compendium of Nature-based Solutions in Small-Medium Islands.
The SMI-NbS Compendium is a comprehensive, open-access global dataset that documents 280 nature-based solutions (NbS) implemented across small and medium-sized islands (SMI). SMI are known for their rich biodiversity and cultural heritage but face socio-economic and environmental challenges, including climate change and sea-level rise, resource scarcity, economic vulnerability and limited capacity for adaptation. The SMI-NbS compendium catalogues diverse NbS case studies from peer-reviewed and grey literature across various ecosystem types and geographic regions. For each NbS, the location, societal challenges addressed, NbS category, ecosystem type, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are provided. The SMI-NbS Compendium is intended to support further research toward the design of context-specific solutions for island settings through knowledge exchange. Developed through a systematic literature review, the compendium ensures consistency and comparability across cases. It also highlights research gaps, such as the underrepresentation of socio-economic dimensions in NbS. By sharing real-world examples and their benefits, the SMI-NbS Compendium fosters knowledge exchange and supports sustainable development pathways for SMI communities.
