Moved scripts into main methods to allow testing

Many of these files have now a main method; other changes done in this PR, if any, need to be investigated, to decide whether they can be incorporated or they are discarded.

Thanks for doing this @ScLill. After investigation:

• 693c008 superseded by commit da3d285 in PR 2to3 #90 and PR ENH: Define main methods to contain computation logic across scripts #167.
• 765d347 superseded by commit 765d347 (looks like cherry picked) in PR 2to3 #90.

Sorry for not having rebased the changes to move the code in scripts to main methods, but at this point it was easier to do a new PR as the body of the methods had most likely changed as well during this time.
