⚡ Bolt: Prevent Event Loop Starvation in API Endpoints#288
Conversation
* Offloads blocking synchronous operations (PDF generation via subprocess, ATS regex compilation, AI customization API requests) inside FastAPI async route handlers to background worker threads using `anyio.to_thread.run_sync`. * Utilizes `functools.partial` to safely pass kwargs to target functions. * Prevents main thread starvation and dramatically improves application throughput under concurrent loads. * Added corresponding Bolt journal entry for ASGI event loop starvation optimizations. 👋 Jules, reporting for duty! I'm here to lend a hand with this pull request. When you start a review, I'll add a 👀 emoji to each comment to let you know I've read it. I'll focus on feedback directed at me and will do my best to stay out of conversations between you and other bots or reviewers to keep the noise down. I'll push a commit with your requested changes shortly after. Please note there might be a delay between these steps, but rest assured I'm on the job! For more direct control, you can switch me to Reactive Mode. When this mode is on, I will only act on comments where you specifically mention me with New to Jules? Learn more at jules.google/docs. 💡 What: Wrapped synchronous blocking heavy tasks (like PDF subprocess execution, complex regex evaluations for ATS checks, and blocking external AI network calls) inside
api/main.pyendpoints withfunctools.partialand passed them toawait anyio.to_thread.run_sync().🎯 Why: In FastAPI/ASGI applications, running heavy CPU-bound or blocking I/O bound synchronous tasks directly inside an
async defroute handler starves the event loop. This blocks the single main thread, queuing up all other incoming concurrent connections and destroying application throughput.📊 Impact: Resolves main-thread locking during PDF compilation and LLM generation. Allows FastAPI to handle hundreds of concurrent requests asynchronously while heavy sync tasks run safely in isolated background thread pools. Throughput increases substantially depending on task size.
🔬 Measurement: Run load testing tools like
wrkorlocusthitting/v1/ats/checkor/v1/resumes/{id}/render/pdfwith high concurrency before and after the change; concurrent throughput should skyrocket.
